Sandblasted vs. Routed Signs

With routed signs, the lettering and/or design is cut down into the surface of the sign blank. The background and surrounding areas are sanded smooth. Routed signs are somewhat less expensive because they don't require rubber mask, or the sandblasting process.

In sandblasting signs, usually the lettering and design are masked off. Surrounding (background) areas are cut and sandblasted away, dramatically emphasising the natural differences between harder and softer parts of the wood grain. It's the lettering and design areas that are sanded smooth and then painted. The fact that the design areas are not recessed, makes it much easier to do fine detailed painting on sandblasted signs.
